Light Guide Film – NEW Membrane Keyboard Backlighting
NEW Light Guide Film Backlighting Option
Light Guide Film (LGF) enables engineers to create high impact custom lit panels at a low cost. Developments within the construction of backlighting have enabled LGF to become the perfect solution for backlighting needs.
What is Light Guide Film?
Light Guide Film technology is a thin layer of film placed between a circuit and graphic overlay to distribute backlighting evenly anywhere on a product’s interface. LEDs are used to direct light through the plastic film. Light is directed to targeted areas through side-firing or right-angle LEDs; the user can then easily identify the illuminated keys on the device. LGF backlighting can be used on switches, keypads and keyboards. LGF backlighting can be directly placed over metal domes. Light transmitted through the tight area resulting in a uniform distribution, ensuring no light leakage between specific colours and areas.
A plastic film as thin as 0.003 inches can be incorporated into membrane switches. Tactile feel of buttons is not affected due to the thinness of the film. LGF can be custom made to suit the required lit shape on the panel. Most commonly used in designs that require tactile keys with backlit artwork. Keys can be individually lit or all at once dependent on actuation. For industries desiring thinner and more advanced lighting solutions within their interfaces, Light Guide Film is the perfect solution.

Why use Light Guide Film?
Compared to other backlighting technologies, LGF is a cost-effective alternative that does not degrade over time. Lighting larger areas with multiple colour options. LGF technology requires fewer LEDs, therefore, less power is used. Leaving more space within the circuit layer for other components, working well within applications that have advanced functionalities. Light Guide Film provides a sleek yet durable solution that enhances user experience.
It is the most popular form of backlighting technology due to,
- Low tooling costs
- Low heat created
- Incredibly precise illumination
