Combikey Keypads
COMBIKEY Custom Keypad Technology from Diamond HMI allows the creation of dynamic 3D keypads which enhance a products appearance and user experience.
COMBIKEY keypads are easy to integrate as they adhere to a product case and connect to internal electronic via a flexible circuit.
What is COMBIKEY Technology?
COMBIKEY keypads are a combination of membrane keyboard and silicone rubber keypad technology.
The silicone rubber top layer is compression moulded in the same way as a standard rubber keypad. However, in COMBIKEY technology, the use of webbing to create a tactile response does not occur. Instead, the rubber layer is attached to a membrane circuit, or PCB layer containing metal domes or poly domes. Similar to that used on a membrane keyboard.
Metal domes are carefully selected to suit a product’s intended market. For example, heavy industrial products require larger keys with strong tactile response. Handheld instruments need smaller keys with a softer response.
Use of a separate circuit layer allows easy integration of LEDs for backlighting of individual keys. The LED’s can be controlled independently to the switches to create unique backlighting effects. Once assembled the COMBIKEY keypad has an outer case adhesive layer attached which forms a sealing rating of up to IP67.
COMBIKEY keypads enhance the user’s product experience, with a 3D design that gives engineers more opportunity to integrate a keypad area into a product’s overall design.

Combikey Keypad Application – Handheld Instrument
Our customer required a keypad which adhered to the surface of his handheld unit proving large key areas with strong tactile feedback for users with gloved hands.
Our Combikey solution could be moulded to follow the contours of the case design as well as providing large raised keys with high force metal domes. These features ensured keys are easy to locate and use with protective gloves. The construction of the CombiKey layers ensured the unit met IP67 standards plus shock and vibration tests to military standards.
