Sustainability depends on durability, service life, repairability and replacement frequency, not just power consumption.
The greenest HMI isn’t necessarily the one that uses the least power, it’s often the one that lasts the longest.
A repairable keypad is often more sustainable than replacing an entire interface, while products designed for long-term reliability can help reduce waste, maintenance and resource consumption.
From membrane switches and silicone keypads to piezo and capacitive touch solutions, extending product life and minimising replacement often has the greatest impact on sustainability.
Here’s our sustainability ranking for HMI technologies:
1. Piezo Keypads
- No moving parts
- Extremely long life (often tens of millions of activations)
- Resistant to water, chemicals and vandalism
- Can remain in service for many years without replacement
- Stainless steel construction is highly recyclable
2. Silicone Rubber Keypads
- Low material usage
- Low power consumption
- Long operating life
- Easy integration with electronics
- Often a lower environmental footprint than large electronic displays
3. Membrane Keypads
- Lightweight and low power
- Minimal electronics required
- Lower material content than a touchscreen HMI
- Can be highly sustainable when designed for long service life
4. Capacitive Touch Interfaces
- No mechanical wear
- Modern appearance
- Typically require additional electronics, controllers and illuminated displays
- More difficult to repair if damaged
5. Full Touchscreen HMIs
- Highest material and electronic content
- Higher energy consumption due to displays and backlighting
- More complex supply chain
- Whole units are often replaced rather than repaired

While full touchscreen HMI’s have their place, such as within smartphones, Diamond HMI specialise within sustainable options like piezo touch and keypads to help ensure robust, long lasting, sustainable custom HMI solutions for our customers. We help ensure their products and associated HMI’s last for years to come.
